• Choose the breed that is best for your family, home and needs. Investigate thoroughly before selecting a puppy and avoid impulse buying or breed selection based on size, price, colour or location. Make sure you are fully aware of the grooming needs of your puppy before committing.
• Choose a breeder who is experienced and has knowledge of the breed, as well as being committed to the effective rearing, socialisation and training of puppies. 
• Be honest with the breeder about your dog experience, your lifestyle, your family and your expectations of a new puppy. Trust the breeder to choose the best puppy for your needs.
• Buy a puppy when you have the time, money and commitment to spend many years raising, training and socialising the puppy. Attend quality puppy classes and other training classes and consult experts if problems arise.
• Follow through with your promises to the breeder in respect to health checks, training, desexing etc.
• Understand the importance of the various critical learning periods and the impact you can make in each one to maximize the full potential of your puppy. Learn as much as you can about the breed and the dog activities that are available or that you are interested in.

Once you get a puppy only YOU can make that puppy into the best it can be, even if simply a wonderful companion for years to come.
